Overview: A two-year Graduate Diploma in Professional Policing Practice (PPPD).
Is this route for you: This route is for anyone who already holds a degree in any subject area and would like to work as an operational police officer for Cumbria Constabulary whilst obtaining a diploma.
Before you start: To be accepted onto the DHEP, candidates have to meet the Constabulary's DHEP eligibility criteria and successfully pass the stages of the Constabulary's police officer recruitment process.
What's involved: The PPPD involves a two-year academic programme with academic modules, course work and exams, with a total academic credit value of 120 credits at Level 6. This coincides with serving as a student training police officer, with active frontline duties within Cumbria Constabulary. The normal working hours of a Police Officer are 40 hours per week.
As per Police Regulations an officer can apply for part time working and the request will be considered following the initial delivery phase and the officer is confirmed as independent in post.
Should an officer move to part time working during their probationary period, the length of the probationary period will be extended on a pro rata basis.
Provider: The academic learning for the DHEP is provided by our *Higher Education Provider Partner the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).
Support: Student officers working towards a diploma will receive support from a UCLan tutor for academic studies, and officers and staff from Cumbria Constabulary will support with the operational role.
Officers will receive one-on-one support from their UCLan tutor.

The DHEP entry route is for officers who already hold an undergraduate degree, these officers will undertake a level 6 graduate diploma licenced and overseen by the College of Policing and delivered through a formal collaboration by the force with University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), a Higher Education Institute (HEI). Officers have a 2 year probationary period, whilst undertaking the shorter Level 6 Diploma in Policing Practice programme. For a full overview of the course view our course information document.
You will begin your course with an initial 21 weeks of classroom learning which includes; giving a presentation set by Area Problem Solving Sergeants, two exams, and a 2 week first aid and Personal Safety Training (PST) course.
After this you will progress into your operational tutor phase or the 'in company' phase, whereby you are out in area but will have protected learning days to complete academic work and assignments. During this time you will also take part in a 3 week driving course.
Finally you will head back into the classroom for 3 weeks of learning. During the first year you will also complete the Independent Patrol Status portfolio, whilst on the operational tutor phase of the programme.
In your first year you will attend classroom learning for a total of 24 weeks and have 6 academic assessments throughout this period. Annual leave is fixed within this year at set times.
In your second, and final year of the course, you will do 25 shift placement attachments and an academic assessment followed by a 3000 word project report. You will then progress into two blocks of two and one week (respectively) of taught work with an academic assessment including a 3000 word case study.
During the second year of the programme you are required to successfully complete the Full Occupational Competency Portfolio, completion of this portfolio and the Diploma in Policing Practice by the end of the second year is required for you to be confirmed in post as a Police Officer.
You will complete 5 weeks of classroom learning in total in Year 2. After all of this you will graduate with a Diploma in Policing Practice.
